Does 'middle-child syndrome' really exist?

THIS week, one reader with acne wonders whether chinese medicine can relieve her sypmptons, while our GP explains all about palpitations, and child behaviour expert Amanda Clarkson discusses 'middle child syndrome'.

THE ACUPUNCTURIST

Da Peng Zhang is director of Chinese medicine at the ShiZhen clinic in Old Trafford.

Q: I am 35 years old and have recently noticed more spots on my face and body. I feel like a teenager again and don't know why I should have this problem at my age. Can Chinese medicine help? Da Peng says: Acne is a skin disorder which results in spots, whiteheads, blackheads and in more serious forms, cysts and abscesses, which can leave disfigured pitted scars when they heal. Acne is commonly seen on the face, back and chest.

Lawyers to feast on dog food scandal

WHEN China executes, America sues: we each have our own culturally idiosyncratic way to protect consumers. So, while Beijing moved with indecent haste to respond to the recent quality crisis involving Chinese products by executing its top food and drug regulator, the US is moving with indecent delay to tackle the problem through the courts.

Consider the case of Penelope - or Zeus or Lilly - or the host of other tabbies and mutts whose loving owners are suing pet food companies that allegedly sold them food tainted with poisons imported from China.

Dozens of class-action lawsuits have been filed across the US, not only arguing sympathy for the trauma of a beloved pet's death, but also demanding compensation for veterinary bills and burial costs, medical monitoring of the pet's condition, cat kidney transplants and canine replacements.

China pours money into drug, food safety

China's food and drug regulator said Wednesday it would meet regularly with its U.S. counterpart to crack down on counterfeit pharmaceuticals and boost product safety.

China is also building new safety testing labs, and upgrading food safety inspection offices at 16 ports and basic infrastructure in central and western China as part of a multiyear, $1.1 billion project, said Yan Jiangying, spokeswoman for the State Food and Drug Administration,

The announcement was one of a series made in recent weeks aimed at allaying global fears that China is not doing enough to guarantee the safety of its food and drug exports.

"China and the U.S. cooperating to fight fake drugs will help us clean up our medicine market," Yan said at a regularly scheduled news conference.
