| Chinese Medicine And Its Benefits
Whilst thought of, for thousands of years, as the primary medical system in China, Chinese medicine is considered as alternative medicine in the Western world. It is becoming increasingly popular in the Western world as people are attracted by the idea of natural healing as opposed to modern medicine and synthetically developed drugs. Said to have been practised for 5,000 years the history of Chinese medicine is anything but lucid. Considered 2,000 years old, Hung-Di Nei-Jing (Cannon of Internal Medicine) is thought to be the first written document concerning Chinese medicine and is attributed to the Yellow Emperor. But dates and author are still far from clear. The primary methods of Chinese medicine, and the ones people are most familiar with, are herbal medicine and acupuncture with massage, qi gong, or food therapy playing a secondary role.
Janine Pineo: One beautiful day
I was zipping along Route 1 with my grandmother down through Sullivan the other day when I saw a sign that had disappeared last year. "Daylilies," it read. I almost slammed on the brakes until I realized I could stop the next day on my return trip. I just hoped the sign wouldn't disappear and I wouldn't be pressed for time. It didn't and I wasn't. After turning onto Route 183 the next afternoon, I came to a fork in the road about a mile later that had another "Daylilies" sign pointing down Thorne Road. I wound down the road for a couple more miles until I came to the last sign. I parked the car and headed toward a greenhouse in the back corner of the yard before noticing someone working in a large, neat garden bed. It was Dick Keen, day lily grower extraordinaire.
China Chided, U.S. Conducts Business As Usual
China has been in the news lately for its contaminated exports, but the U.S. is also producing products that contain hazardous chemicals, reports NAM writer, Donal Brown. Brown is a former journalism teacher. The recent flurry of news reports over the Chinese exports of contaminated consumer products raises the specter of dangerous U.S. products long marketed in the U.S. and around the world. In light of the consternation about China, the U.S. government formed a cabinet-level Product Safety Panel. It has also raised questions for a leading U.S. health expert. The criticism of China is well-based, but we need to listen to the facts that there are a wide range of hazardous chemicals in U.S. products, said Dr. Samuel S. Epstein, chair of the Cancer Prevention Coalition. Epstein, a professor emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Medicine, said that our foremost concern should be contaminated U.S.

Sleep Deprivation Can Lead To Smoking, Drinking
Sleep loss or disturbed sleep can heighten the risk for adolescents to take up smoking and drinking, two habits that may prove to be detrimental to their health, according to a research abstract presented at SLEEP 2007, the 21st Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS). The study, conducted by Xianchen Liu, MD, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh, was based a questionnaire survey among 1,362 adolescents, with an average age of 14.6 years, in five high schools in China. The self-administered questionnaire collected data on sleep patterns, sleep problems, smoking and drinking behavior, behavioral and emotional problems, life stress, and demographic characteristics of the adolescent and family. The results showed that sleeping less than eight hours at night, frequent nightmares and difficulty initiating sleep were significantly associated with drinking.
