| Ordonez hits two HRs in same inning to lead Tigers
Luis Castillo set the mark for second basemen from May 30, 2006, to June 5, 2007, with Minnesota. Ordonez also connected against the As on Saturday night, perhaps sparking his slumping team. Since the Tigers had four victories in a row from July 15-19, they had won two straight only once (Aug. 6-7) while losing 16 of 22 before beating Oakland on Saturday night. Oaklands Marco Scutaro hit a two-run homer in the second. Scutaro hit an RBI double and scored on Dan Johnsons double in the fourth. Detroit added to its cushion with one run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take an 11-5 lead. Nate Robertson (7-9) gave up five runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings, giving Detroit consecutive wins by a starter for the first time since its four-game winning streak last month.
Critic John Clute has been using his excessive candor to define ...
That the bank, the parents, the friends, the lovers, the colleagues have all suddenly realized that you've been cheating them all these years. And suddenly, just like being naked, your wallet is entirely empty. Which brings up the other pitfall, the obvious one: That there is no salary. You could really be naked. And you have no excuse. On the other hand, I suppose the heart of what is good about being a freelance is so evident to any freelance that it is hard to remember that others don't share the privilege: The privilege of living your own life. That you can remember your life unbroken. That you can walk into the street as a child does (though creakier), as though the world lies before you (though dimmer). Being a freelance, when the juices are flowing and the panic (see above) has been leashed for a bit, is like a daily moult.
Flying Over Ames
Despite consistently strong performances in all televised debates, and spending far more money than his GOP rivals, the Gallup Poll puts him in fourth place—with only half the backing of third-placer John McCain. Part of the problem may be the spreading perception that he's “too perfect" to be president. The other major candidates have experienced divorce, infidelity, or both, but Romney married his high school sweetheart 39 years ago and they've produced five spectacularly successful, happily married sons. This impeccably-groomed multimillionaire also affiliates with a controversial church that prohibits pre-marital sex, alcohol, tobacco, and divorce. Somehow Romney needs to identify with his imperfect fellow citizens. Maybe he could start by expressing sympathy for rival Rudy Giuliani and his wife in the face of scurrilous personal attacks against them in Vanity Fair magazine.
Matchday feeding - how chicken balti pie became a cult
Shire Foods, in 1997, for Walsall and Villa. They're now sold at over 70 clubs, 14 in the Premier League, and Shire cook 100,000 a month at a bakery in Leamington Spa. Several rival brands are now available too. Why put curry in a pie? Why not? They go with lager. 'In the Nineties the Midlands was famous for balti meals,' says Shire's Vic Doyle. 'As a pie manufacturer we thought it was a great opportunity. A typical Friday night for many young males is lager and a curry, so we thought if you get all that in the authenticity of a pie product, it would work at football.' It has. So what's in them? Steamed chicken breast and orange balti goodness. 'We used local curry makers to get the mix right,' says Doyle. 'People can tell the difference between curry powder and a real, authentic curry so we had to get it spot on.
