Clinton Discussed Use of Nukes Last Year

I would certainly take nuclear weapons off the table," she said in April 2006.

Her views expressed while she was gearing up for a presidential run stand in conflict with her comments this month regarding Obama, who faced heavy criticism from leaders of both parties, including Clinton, after saying it would be "a profound mistake" to deploy nuclear weapons in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"There's been no discussion of nuclear weapons. That's not on the table," he said.

Clinton, who has tried to cast her rival as too inexperienced for the job of commander in chief, said of Obama's stance on Pakistan: "I don't believe that any president should make any blanket statements with respect to the use or non-use of nuclear weapons."

But that's exactly what she did in an interview with Bloomberg Television in April 2006.

Unlikely haven

Irresistible fare: A sloth bear and two cubs present themselves for their share of jaggery.

AN ancient myth speaks of the presence of Jambavantha, the King of Bears, in the Kishkinda hill area of Hampi in Karnataka. Jambavantha was the bear who had the famous Symantaka gem in his possession, and the Mahabharata talks about the fierce 21-day battle between the bear-king and Krishna. Hampi, with its historic ruins, is situated just 25 km away from the Daroji Bear Sanctuary.

Local lore

The locals believe that it is because of Jambavantha that the area abounds in sloth bears.

Chinese buffet gets OK to reopen

City Buffet and Grill reopened noon Friday after ridding the restaurant of cockroaches.

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Director of Food Safety Bill Chirdon said inspectors were called out Friday morning to do a follow-up inspection. The Chinese restaurant on Carlisle Street in Penn Township performed poorly during an inspection Wednesday partly because of a "severe" cockroach infestation.

"Visible physical evidence of insect activity observed in kitchen under three basin sink and on stainless prep table. Roach-like insects were observed crawling out of plastic wrap box. Observed numerous dead insects in cabinets," the initial health inspection report states.

State officials closed the restaurant Wednesday night.

Chirdon said a pest-control operator hired by the restaurant to correct the problem believes everything has been taken care of.

There's lots more going on this weekend:

Edmonds Waterfront Festival. Say ahoy to classic yachts, arts and crafts, family entertainment, good food and more at Port of Edmonds Marina Friday through Sunday.

Herb and Food Fair . If you've ever wondered about herbal medicine, reflexology or natural cooking, head over to Bastyr University in Kenmore Saturday. Cooking demonstrations, lectures and guided herb-garden walks are scheduled regularly. Pick up a pamphlet or two about practicing naturopathy and stick around for the scads of vegetarian, vegan and otherwise healthy treats.

Duvall Days. Lions and tigers and bears? Well, not quite. But Saturday, downtown Duvall will host horses on parade, pony rides, cows, a petting zoo and a dog show. For those less animal-inclined, a dunk tank, hands-on crafts activities and a classic-car show will be there, too.

When it comes to food and drugs, following the money is good advice

When it comes to food and drugs, following the money is good advice. North American manufacturers, looking to save money, have increasingly turned to China for cheap ingredients. The consequences appeared earlier this year when more than 4,000 cats and dogs died as a result of tainted pet food.

If you follow the money in China, however, you will discover that the story gets even scarier. The former head of China's State Food and Drug Administration has just been sentenced to death for accepting bribes and gifts that totaled more than $800,000.

At last count, roughly 170,000 drug licenses must now be reviewed. There is a fear that corruption in the Chinese agency led to many drug approvals without proper oversight. Counterfeit drugs are common in China.

Hamilton Co. Commissioners Cut Budget To Bus Inmates

To address jail overcrowding Hamilton County commissioners extended the busing of inmates to Butler County until the end of the year.

In order to do this they had to cut $1.7 million from the county's budget.

The busing plan is a short term solution to the overcrowding at the Hamilton County Justice Center.

Commissioners Pepper and Portune say if voters don't pass the safety plan in November the county will not have enough money to keep the program going while the funding over a new jail is debated.

"Basically the dollars we were going to use to spend to tear down the Kahn site in preparation for the new facility we used those dollars and then we cut back on some capital maintainence and are frankly important you don't want to get into the habit of doing this but it at least let us get through this short term concern after october we wouldn't have had any space for these people." Said Commissioner David Pepper.

Mom wants to eat placenta

But when Nevada's Anne Swanson, 30, wanted to eat her child's placenta after giving birth, the hospital refused to return the organ on the grounds that it contains blood and might carry infectious disease, according to a news brief in The Week.

Though mammals ingest the placenta--the disposable sac that transfers oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the baby and removes waste--humans are a bit more discriminating.

Those who do eat it generally believe it has medicinal properties such as helping with postpartum depression or other pregnancy complications. In Chinese medicine, the placenta is known as a great life force. Last year, Hawaii became the first state to pass a law allowing hospitals to release placentas for spiritual reasons.

Swanson, who experienced postpartum depression with her first child, and planned to have her second child's dried, ground into a powder and packed into capsules, believes she has the right to her own body part.

Jewelry Robbery Suspects Lead Police On High Speed Chase

Two robbery suspects led police on a high speed chase from Kentucky into Cincinnati Saturday afternoon. Boone County Sheriff's said it began around noon after the suspects allegedly stole a loose diamond valued at approximately $75,000 from the Rogers Jewelers inside the Florence Mall. Cincinnati Police assisted Boone County and Florence deputies in the foot pursuit, calling a K9 unit to help. No word on whether the suspects were caught or if the diamond was recovered. No injuries were apparent at either scene. Stay with 9News for the latest on this breaking story.
