Chinese herbs can help control eczema: HK study

HONG KONG (Reuters) - A mixture of five traditional Chinese herbs can help control and manage eczema, a study by researchers in Hong Kong suggests.

Considered a chronic condition, eczema is the inflammation of the upper layers of the skin that results in rashes, dryness, itching, flaking, even blistering and bleeding.

While there is no definitive cure for it in Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine has long held that eczema can be countered by clearing heat and removing dampness in one's body and strengthening the spleen. .

Africa: Africa Insight - It's Time the West Accepted Africa's ...

Despite the increasing availability of Anti-retro viral drugs (ARVs) in sub Saharan Africa, the continent's traditional healers and their plant medicines are playing an important role in the treatment of some of the most dreadful HIV and Aids-related opportunistic infections and other ailments.

ARVs present some challenging problems and stark limitations in Africa. For starters, they are sill costly for people living with HIV and Aids in the developing world. Furthermore, since Africa's population is still largely rural, the issue of accessibility is also a major concern. These anti-Aids drugs also require the support of expensive medical infrastructure not available in many developing countries in Africa and elsewhere and rarely available in rural areas of any developing country.

For example, you can subscribe to the "International" RSS feed, or order thinner RSS slices dedicated to news from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Instead, it uses colored text that becomes underscored when you "mouse over."

Pages now spread out wider than Fat Joe's ass to exploit the vistas opened up by large monitors. If you don't have a large flat screen, order one. It will cost you a little more than half of the $621 you'll save by canceling home delivery.

A few quibbles. A new serif body face, Georgia, replaces the old serif face, Times New Roman.

Book Report: Birmingham puts recipe cards on the table for delicious ...

The Junior League of Birmingham, Ala., has produced a winner with its newest cookbook, "Tables of Content: Service, Settings and Supper" ($29.95, hardcover).

The 335-page cookbook’s preface notes that the Junior League cookbook committee members "knew we wanted to celebrate the dinner hour and to solicit family recipes that were both comforting and memorable, familiar but with a new twist." They asked contributors to provide stories about their recipes and why they were important to their families.

The 9x11-inch, lay-flat cookbook showcases nine Birmingham landmarks for the beautiful color photographs of table settings that open each chapter.

It also includes an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent Rick Bragg; lots of menu and food preparation tips; nutritional information about some of the book’s more than 350 home-tested recipes; menus with suggestions for wines; a ribbon book mark; and the history of the Junior League of Birmingham.

US elections 2004

They combine their realness with being Republican voters who backed George Bush in 2000 but are so disillusioned that they will be voting for John Kerry this time.

Writing in his weblog, Morris says he has been "struck by the eloquence of ordinary citizens". You can watch the ads on his site or on Moveonpac, a campaign group for moderate politics (in other words, the Democrats).

There seem to be a lot of Vietnam veterans in the mix of real people. In his advert, Richard Dove, a retired colonel and veteran, says he is not happy about what Mr Bush has done to the fish.

"My son and I were commercial fishermen, but the fish got sick and we got sick and the river went belly-up," he says. "We found the source of pollution and got regulations in place that changed it, but then George Bush took office and cancelled those regulations.
