Greenlight Ledbetter Heights studio
Planting a film studio in Ledbetter Heights offers Shreveport an opportunity to firm up the west edge of downtown, reduce blight, trigger rejuvenation in an under-appreciated corner of the city and help a nascent movie industry put down deeper roots. The Shreveport City Council on Tuesday ought to approve the lease being recommended by the administration. The 6.7-acre site that the city originally planned for a park would become the first phase of a proposed two-phase project in which Millennium Films eventually would occupy a 20-acre tract. The initial phase that most interests Millennium would include a soundstage, office and craft space. .
DATA SNAP: Japan April-June GDP Worse Than Expected
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan's economy lost steam in the April-June period, growing at its slowest pace in three quarters as exports and consumption decelerated, the government said Monday. The country's gross domestic product, or the total output of goods and services, grew a price-adjusted 0.1% from the previous quarter, or an annualized 0.5%, in the three months through June, according to preliminary data released by the Cabinet Office. A lack of international trade gains and slower consumption put a damper on growth, which was far weaker than the first quarter's annualized 3.2% rise and the October-December period's 5.4% jump, the data showed. The headline figure was worse than the average 0.2% on-quarter rise, or an annualized 0.9% gain, forecast by economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires.
DUBLIN /BART station to be shut part of weekend
The new $80 million station will be built in the median of Interstate 580 between the Castro Valley and Dublin/Pleasanton stations. The track needs to be clear so that construction crews have access to it. During the closure, BART will run bus service between the Dublin/Pleasanton and Castro Valley stations. BART hopes to open the new station - yet unnamed - in 2009. .
