Cherry Hill wants alcohol sensors for school events

The board of education will consider letting the district purchase 10 passive alcohol sensors in an attempt to curtail teen drinking prior to school-sponsored events such as dances and football games.

The devices would be purchased only after board members look at how they have worked in other districts. If the full board approves the purchase, the sensors would be available sometime after the start of the school year for shared use by the high schools and middle schools.

Mike Nuzzo, district security director, said the sensors are among a variety of tools the district would like to have to help identify at-risk behaviors.

"There has been a slight increase of incidences of alcohol consumption at co-curricular events," he told the board Tuesday night.

The hand-held sensors have a heating element that can detect alcohol vapors.

22 pro-Congress families plan to shift

Twentytwo families aligned to the Congress and belonging to Madh village near Rayya have decided to shift to safer places fearing suppression from Akali workers.

The fear-stricken families, including women folk and children, who have come here in search of a suitable shelter in the city, told newsmen today that they had set up a small temple in their house and used to organise jagrata twice a year during the navratras.

They alleged that the tranquil atmosphere in the area saw a sudden change with the SAD candidate coming to power in the Beas segment, which had remained in the headlines due to a firing incident a few days before the poll in which an Akali worker was killed.

Bhagat Naresh Kumar, whose is heading these families, said last week while they were performing puja at the temple, Jugraj Singh, a confidant of SAD MLA Manjinder Singh Kang, along with his supporters, started throwing stones at his house and warned that that such activities would not be tolerated in the future as they had a free run for the past five years.
