Zoos kill healthy tigers for the skin trade

ZOOS are killing healthy tigers and other endangered species and selling their skins to be stuffed and mounted as trophies for private collectors, an investigation has found.

The skins are sold by the zoos to taxidermists who prepare them for clients in defiance of attempts by the government to stifle the trade in tiger products.

Last week undercover reporters from The Sunday Times were offered the skins from two zoo tigers, which were both only a few years old when they died, for £6,000. "There are too many of them and if they are not put down they will die of old age, get incinerated and thrown away," Andre Brandwood, a Hertford-shire taxidermist, told them.

He said zoos had recognised there was a market and were placing a "shelf life" on animals to cash in by having them stuffed before they got old, suffered illness and then cost them money.

Nigeria: Rescuing the NYSC Programme

The years of the 1970s, especially the period after the Nigerian civil war, were the years of great patriotic thought and action in Nigeria. The ambience was a most creative one, in the sense that for those who lived through those years, given the backdrop of the killings and destruction of the war and the survival of the country as one, there did not seem to be any set objective which could not be achieved.

The Second National Development Plan, 1975-1980, encapsulated that broadness of vision, the spirit of daring and a very infectious optimism which shot through a lot of the steps taken and achievements recorded.

Nigeria: Another David in History

If the Wizard of Oz had had the gift of the three astrologers from the East, who came to pay homage to the new born child in Bethelhem, we would have asked him to look into the stargazing ball and tell us if Matthew Aremu's parents were right in the choice of his names. Couldn't David have fitted more appropriately into the first name choice rather than Matthew? Between Matthew and David, the similarities pale into insignificance. Whereas one was a commoner who made good to be a disciple of the Master telling the world of a far flung island of bliss, the other was also a commoner promoted to a General, a mighty man of valour, a king greatly favoured and loved by God even in the midst of sins for which ordinary men were hardly left to go unpunished. This God, if one could be spared of blasphemy, showed so much favouritism to his beloved David that many wondered how right this could be.

Multimedia Review

Each dog has a unique personality right down to food allergies and occupations such as a therapy dog, and Frasier gives each pooch a distinctive voice. The illustrations of the dogs are realistic, but the humans are done from a slightly skewed perspective. While the story line is entertaining, there are some didactic elements, such as when an older, wiser dog explains what a petition is and how it tells elected officials what community members want. In addition, the death of one of the dogs from old age is jarring. An additional purchase best suited to one-on-one viewing.—Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL

Former head of Chinese drug watchdog appeals death sentence

The former head of China's pharmaceutical watchdog, who was sentenced to death on corruption charges last month, has appealed for leniency in a second hearing of his case.

Zheng Xiaoyu, former director of China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), asked the court of second instance to reconsider his sentence as the "penalty was too severe".

Zheng said he "confessed his crimes" and "cooperated with the investigating prosecutors", which could merit a lighter sentence under Chinese law.

Zheng, 63, was sentenced at the Beijing Municipal No. 1 Intermediate Court on May 29 for taking bribes and dereliction of duty.

He received the death penalty on the graft charge and seven years in prison for dereliction of duty. All his personal property was confiscated and he was deprived of his political rights for life.

Paradigmatic Conversations

Maybe we need a Huckleberries Online for Spokane.

I'm not so confident that blogs can be journalism, per se. But they do provide a great entry point and forum for communication with readers - a role traditionally held by columnists and/or the letters page.

Come to think of it, Paul Turner's The Slice is essentially a blog - it's a moderated (and very cleverly assembled) collection of reader input. And it keeps a lot of people reading the paper.
