Lefkowitz, M.D., Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at Duke University Medical Center, has received the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine for 2007 for his research into understanding the receptor system that controls the bodys response to drugs and hormones.

The announcement was made today in Hong Kong by the Shaw Prize Foundation. Lefkowitz will receive the award, which includes a $1 million prize, during a ceremony in Hong Kong on Sept. 11.

The annual prize, which was first granted in 2004, was established by Run Run Shaw, a Chinese native who founded the film company Shaw Brothers Limited in Hong Kong in the 1950s. Shaw also serves as executive chairman of Television Broadcasts Limited, also in Hong Kong.

Lefkowitz, a Duke faculty member since 1972, received the award for his "relentless elucidation" of what are known as seven-transmembrane-spanning receptors.

The Beginnings Of Traditional Chinese Medicine

The foundations of many holistic practices are the philosophies and ideals that come from Chinese medicine. Alternative and natural healing are based on concepts and philosophies of an ancient science and from the beginnings of this practice there has been a growth in natural methods to help promote healing and balance.

Herbal remedies that were most significant in helping with holistic healing were first recorded in 800 BC in a book known as the "Huang Di Nei Jeng" or "The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine." The origins of Chinese medicine as a practice come from this year even though the practice began before this.

Tuning Into Opposites For Health

According to the discoveries made for holistic health within Chinese medicine the principle of Yin and Yang is the foundation of the entire universe. It underlies everything in creation and determining whether Yin or Yang predominates is important to restoring any imbalances that are present within the body system.

Yin and Yang is one of the many principles that are at the root of Chinese medicine and it's functioning and was applied through Taoism, one of the religious practices in the Orient. From this philosophy, the Chinese discovered that the laws of the universe could be applied to each individual in order to gain optimum health.

BEIJING (AP) -- A $1.1 billion project to improve supervision of China's scandal-ridden food and drug industries by next year is progressing, an official said Wednesday.

The project -- given the green light in late 2005 by the central government -- is aimed at improving oversight by renovating facilities like inspection offices and testing labs, and upgrading technological capabilities, said Yan Jiangying, a State Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman.

"The foundation is weak and infrastructure and technology still lag behind," Yan said at a regular briefing.

"The goal is to raise the levels and ability of supervision of food and drugs," she said.

Downtown Eastside Women Ask Politicians for Housing Swap

Human Rights Commission and Ministry of Women's Equality, both considered tools to fight discrimination, have been eliminated and pay equity provisions in B.C. have been repealed. This means that there is no longer a requirement that women receive equal pay for work of comparable value to that performed by men. Women working low-income jobs, whether or not they have dependants, often live below the poverty line and seldom have the time or energy to investigate the reasons behind the scarcity they encounter on a daily basis.
