Laminaria japonica has a long history of use in Asia, including Japan, China, South Korea and other countries. It has been used as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine and possesses many physiological functions for human health and skin care.

Since the middle of the 1990's, there have been several scientific studies which have exposed the secrets regarding Laminaria japonica efficacy. Fucoidan and Alginates are believed to be the key factors.

Fucoidan, a class of natural sulfated heteropolysaccharides, isolated from the brown algae Laminaria japonica, is known to contain not only L-fucose residues as the main sugar constituent, but also galactose, mannose, xylose, glucuronic acid and so on.

Some observations from selected studies include:

Fucoidan is a sugar-based sulfated polysaccharide that retains moisture and has immunostimulating, anticoagulating, and antiaging activity.6-9
Two separate French studies published in Biomedical Pharmacotherapy show that fucose and fucose-rich polysaccharides penetrate the skin, decrease free radical scavenging, and increase the cell proliferation to slow down the aging of skin cells.10,11
In France, woman have traditionally use Fucoidan to increase hair growth and soften rough and damaged skin.12
It is been shown to be effective in breast cancer prevention.15

Cactus Botanics introduced Fucoidan in Aug 2005.

Traditional Chinese medicine - Back To The Plants

Traditional Chinese medicine theory is based on several transcendent structures including the Theory of Yin-yang, the Five Elements, the human body Meridian system, and Zang Fu organ theory, implying everything has a place and a structure in order to help with healing. Holistic health in an individual is attained by these natural approaches and one of the principles that Chinese medicine uses in relation to this is herbal remedy. By combining a variety of elements, there is the ability for the herbs to help in healing everything.

Herbal remedy theory is based on a combination of a series of herbs in order to bring about the desired result. Usually, a formula of four herbs is used in union with each other in order to treat any secondary illnesses that may have been affected by the primary illness.

Domestic news

A Chinese herbalist who supplied abortion pills while posing as a NSW-registered doctor had failed to accept the limits of his work in traditional medicine, a judge said.

Handing Yao Guo Lin a 13 month suspended jail term, Acting Justice Jane Mathews referred to the enormous risks to the public if unqualified persons assumed the role of medical experts.

"One of my real concerns is whether he understands even now where the boundary lies between providing traditional Chinese remedies on the one hand, and adopting the mantle of a medical practitioner on the other," she said.

"Even during the hearing before me, he described himself more than once as a doctor."

Lin, a 65-year-old Sydneysider also known as David Lin, had pleaded guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to 31 counts of breaching the Medical Practices Act.

Taman Tun Dr Ismails Yen Woh On Medical Hall is no different... except that it has stood its ground for over 28 years.

It is one of the first three businesses that opened in the Tun Mohd Fuad area of Taman Tun. The other two were Foto Golden and Bata (although this is no longer there).

Today, with health being foremost in everyones minds, the traditional and natural way of healing is making a comeback.

The medicinal ingredients of roots and herbs are placed in huge glass jars and old-fashioned steel pounders, cutters and weighing scales are all part of the stores charm.
