Web site teams Western doctors with alternative medicine

When Jason Gordon battled cancer, he received treatment not only from a surgeon and an oncologist, but also experts in Chinese medicine, yoga, a cross-cultural nutritionist, a psychotherapist and an energy healer. Encouraging these practitioners to work together in coordinating his care helped put the cancer into remission, Gordon said.

Now healthy, the Miami resident has set up Yellow Courtyard, a Web site that creates teams of both traditional doctors and alternative medicine practitioners to set up health care strategies for individual patients. The approach is rare, but growing. Both the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University teach medical school students about alternative practices, such as acupuncture, massage and Eastern herbs.

Mbeki has been outflanked by Mugabe - MDC

President Thabo Mbeki seems likely to go to the Southern Africa Development Community summit in Lusaka on Thursday unable to claim much progress on the Zimbabwe crisis. Unless there is an unlikely and last-minute breakthrough between the Zanu-PF and opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Mbeki will tell SADC that Zimbabwe will not have a new constitution ahead of national elections next March. Instead, Mbeki is expected to tell his peers that any reforms will have to emerge from an amendment to Zimbabwe's independence constitution. Mbeki was appointed by SADC to mediate between Zanu-PF and the MDC at a summit in Dar es Salaam in March, two weeks after MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and colleagues were savagely beaten by police. .

China defends produce safety, says responsible

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese government minister defended the safety and quality of goods made in China on Monday, following a series of health scandals connected to Chinese products.

"The Chinese government pays a great deal of attention to consumer safety. China is a responsible country when it comes to protecting consumers' health and security," said Li Chuanqing, a vice-minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

"We have worked hard to protect product quality and people's health," said Li, whose ministry is also in charge of ensuring the safety of the country's food exports.

Billions of dollars worth of counterfeit and substandard goods, from fake liquor and drugs to luxury handbags, are produced every year in China.

Tibetan monk visits Flagstaff to treat residents

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Lobsang Tenzin is calm and his touch gentle, as he places the three middle fingers of his right hand on an older woman's right wrist.

Dressed in maroon and saffron-colored clothing, the monk is evaluating what he calls the woman's pulse.

"I am looking for nerves, how deep, how strong," said Lobsang Tenzin, an ordained Tibetan Buddhist monk and doctor of Tibetan medicine. "I look at patients' tongue, eyes, face and color."

Tenzin arrived in Flagstaff May 11 on an Amtrak via Los Angeles.

He is staying with local residents Marsha and John Ashurst. Tenzin will see patients through mid-June, thanks to the Ashursts and donated office space.

Tenzin is in Flagstaff to give Tibetan medical evaluations and to dispense herbal treatments.

Do Tory Burch Shoes Count as Therapy? 'Fix It: A Comedy about Love, Self-Help and The Recovery from Both' Has the ...

"Fix It: A Comedy About Love, Self-Help and the Recovery From Both" hilariously explores how far one woman will go to get her groove back. Sassy Megan Griswold looks like she has it all - down to her Tory Burch shoes. But when faced with marital catastrophe, she relies on a lifetime of self-help training to fix it. In the process, she clocks more than 10,000 hours in everything from acupuncture, homeopathy and yoga to the nuttier EMDR (that's eye movement desensitization reprogramming for the uninitiated). The result is a riotous and poignant tale of personal change. .
